if i'm not grounded pretty soon, i'm gonna go into orbit.

Just watched Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) last night. One of the best movies I've seen in the past few years; it was so easy to become absorbed into their slow journey to nowhere. Also, who knew James Taylor was a looker back in the day? He broods so well. And Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys plays the meathead mechanic to a T. Warren Oates made me want to cry, multiple times. Here's why Richard Linklater loves it so much. I'd only even heard about this movie because I picked this record up a few months back- a tribute record to the movie (which in itself, has very sparse musical content) which came out in 2003. The songs are odd and beautiful, and really do justice to the movie.
  1. SANDY BULL - Little Maggie
  2. WILL OLDHAM & ALAN LICHT - Don't Cry Driver
  3. ALVARIUS B. - Sleep Gunner
  4. CALEXICO - No Doze
  5. WILCO - Old Maid
  6. STEFFEN BASHO-JUNGHANS - Lazy Waters
  7. MARK EITZEL & MARC CAPELLE - What The Girl Didn't Say
  8. ROSCOE HOLCOMB - Boat's Up The River
  9. SUNTANAMA - Parallels
  10. GIANT SAND - Vanishing Point
  11. CHARALAMBIDES - Flying Machine
  12. LEADBELLY - Stewball
  13. SONIC YOUTH - Loop Cat
  14. CAT POWER - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
  15. ROY MONTGOMERY - 2LB

  1. I love that movie and the look and feel of early 70's natural light cinematography in so many movies of that time period - Badlands, The Passenger, Vanishing Point. Classics.
